About
Joshua Madden is a third-year PhD candidate at The University of Queensland, researching fire dynamics in open-plan mass timber compartments. Prior to his PhD, Joshua spent over six years as a fire safety engineer at WSP, delivering bespoke fire strategies for complex buildings such as airports, stadiums, and prisons. He holds a Bachelor and Master’s of Engineering from UQ and is a Chartered Professional Engineer with Engineers Australia and RPEQ.
His research is motivated by the need to support the safe use of sustainable yet combustible building materials, such as timber. He has recently presented at major conferences domestically and internationally . His contributions have been recognised through several awards, including the 2023 SFS Research Grant, 2023 SFPE Student Research Grant, and the 2024 Gottstein Trust Scholarship. Joshua is committed to bridging research and practice to develop holistic fire safety strategies for the next generation of timber buildings.
